Installing an air-to-water heat pump - here's how it's done

How to install an air-to-water heat pump? We hung out with CTC installer Kjell Hasselberg of Hasselbergs VVS in Karlskrona, when he installed an air-to-water heat pump at the home of a family in a newly purchased older house.

The Karlskrona family's old heat pump broke down and together with Kjell Hasselberg they found a new long-term solution to their heating needs. In the process of replacing it with a new heat pump, they also made sure to get rid of the old oil tank. This made it easier to convert the basement into a normal room.

Two days to demolish and install

The work of removing the old heating system and putting in a new one is split over two days.

Day one
On the first day, the old equipment is demolished. Kjell Hasselberg advises that it's a good idea to clean and tidy up so that everything that needs to be removed can be easily accessed. It saves time. Then the new outdoor part of the air/water heat pump is put in place with new pipes and the indoor part is put in place in the basement.

Day two
On the second day, the electrician comes and installs a new safety switch, rewires the control panel and places a sensor on the outside of the house. The sensor is placed on the north side where it is coldest.

In this family, plugs with more power in them are needed to match the new installation. The pipes are finished and as the afternoon approaches, it's time for the highlight of the day: commissioning the new heat pump.

Commissioning the new heat pump

Kjell Hasselberg switches on the necessary settings and starts the pump so that the water heats up and can begin to heat the house and provide hot water for showers and laundry.

What he likes best about heat pumps is that there are savings for the property owner.
- And that has to be the best climate thing there is. You take the hot out of the air, heat the house and blow the cold air out. That's how we'd lower the temperature of the earth if everyone had an air-to-water heat pump," jokes Kjell Hasselberg.

In a few months he'll make a return visit to adjust the settings if necessary. And by then, the Karlskrona family will have enjoyed many days with their new heat pump.

How much does it cost to install an air-to-water heat pump?

Here you can see the current prices for air-to-water heat pumps from CTC. The work qualifies for a root deduction and then materials are added. Calculate the total savings over time. This will be shown in the energy calculation that you will receive from the installer initially. The total saving over time is the most important factor.

Don't install a heat pump yourself

Use certified plumbing companies with proven knowledge of heat pump installation, then all warranties apply and the house usually increases in value slightly.

A certified plumbing company will also be able to carry out all the electrical work correctly thanks to their subcontractors. The installer will gather information about your property and get an idea of your overall energy needs, make an energy calculation and recommend the right pump.
